I used a red LED bar wired to the parking ligths. Mounted the bar so that my console was illuminated. Worked great and red does not hurt your vision when night driving.

I use silicon spray but I only leave it on for a short time and then lightly wipe off any excess and that seemed to fix the long wait (more than a couple of minutes) for the jacks to retract.
