I agree fully with what you are saying-- but only up to the point about finding fresh water! It is really a dfifferent story on the East than the West. There are many places where there is simply NO water when you get very far West.
There are places where folks that live within twenty miles of Austin have no running water and have to haul it in in trucks!
So you may finally find that river or lake but find a bunch of cows standing in it, trying to stay cool, so we never plan on using "found" water for drinking or cooking. I have enough trouble drinking the local water after treatment as it still smells and tastes like the back end of a cow!
But that is where it has to be thought about before we take off. Thinking after we get out there is how folks die every few days due to heat and no water, so we plan ahead!
How much to carry, when and where to fill will change about every trip we take. I used to never worry the showers too much and just went swimming but now I like one about every day!
