Replacing the mattress in a 2014 Tour

Help! Has anyone replaced the mattress in a Tour 42QD? We'd love a memory foam one but so far haven't found one that allows for the fold when bringing in the slides. Thanks!

We replaced the Ideal Rest air mattress in our Adventurer 4-years ago. We used a “mattress in a box” foam mattress from an online company called Leesa. It works fine with the bed tilt function and the tilting to put the slide in is really no problem. The mattress isn’t specifically made for this purpose but it was described as suitable for tilting “foundations” and many foam mattresses are like it.

If you ask the company if it will work they are likely to say no because they don’t understand how our RV tilts work and they don’t want to be responsible. But I can vouch that they work just fine. I doubt a coil spring would work however.

The bed in your Tour isn’t a standard sized King mattress. It’s 2” shorter and 2” narrower than a standard King. Usually this is called an RV King - 72” by 80”. We bought a California King which is that necessary 2” narrower but it was 2” too long. I removed the headboard and the mattress fit perfectly. We thought the headboard was overly ornate and we were happy to lose it.

You can order a made to order custom RV King from a few companies: Mattress Insider is one, Brooklyn Bedding is another, but I just did a search for RV King mattresses and there were lots of places listing them.

I’ve read about others that have done as we have without any problems. But it’s up to you if you want to go this route.

Here’s our mattress installed without the super easy to remove headboard (4-small screws hidden in tufts of material):

We just replaced the idealrest mattress in our 2018 Journey. We were on our third set of air inserts and a second compressor. We purchased a memory foam mattress (RV King) on Amazon. (Serenia Sleep RVKing). It fits perfect and the bed slides and tilts just fine for the slide to come in and out.
