Basement AC question

I have a 2007 Journey with the basement AC model 6537A671. The 2nd compressor is supposed to start a short time after the main compressor. It tries but doesn't run. I can hear it kick in but it quits after a few seconds. I have seen amperage go up during the time 2nd compressor tries to start.

Could this be a bad compressor or something else?

Thank you in advance.

Sounds exactly like a bad starting capacitor. Look inside and you will find the capacitor next to the compressor. Get its mfd rating. Anything within 20%, preferably larger should work.

Thank you David. I was thinking start capacitor but had second thoughts could it be the compressor. I will order start capacitors for both.

Order a hard start SPP-6 also. Will help compressor start easier and if you have low voltage. With in there check all connections and tighten any screws. Power off of course.

What amperage shore power are you connected to? If 30A or less, this can happen.

This past fall I had to replace the fan bushing on my 07 Meridian. While doing so I thought might as well replace all of the capacitors (6) the one fan motor capacitor can only be reached after you pull the ac out.

Anyway Granger had all but two of the capacitors at a very good price. You can get to all of them from the front except the one for the fan.

Be sure to get the complete kit which include a PTCR solid state starting device. Low campground voltage usually causes the PTCR solid state device to overheat and fail so best practice on the Basement Air Unit is to replace both the device and the capacitor when either has failed.

Here is what should be included when you buy the OEM parts.

Getting a voltage correction transformer to boost low voltage back up into the correct range can save you a lot of these repairs over the long haul. Its been 10 years since I've had a capacitor or really any other major electrical item fail since I installed an Autoformer Voltage Correction Transformer in my coach.

If you are not a DIY type guy Shelbourne RV in Cleveland TN, is one of the few RV repair facilities that actually like removing and working on the Coleman Mach Basement Units.

We went through a lot of different replacement parts including the start capacitors, replaced the inside fan and bearings which were really rubbing and wobbling (so it wasn't wasted) however the end repair was simply replacing the Control Module. We called AirExcel tech support and shared all the different voltage meter readings when the first stage started, second stage attempt, and running and they told us to stop trying to start with the current control module or we were just going to burn out our new start capacitors. We changed the control board and it's been working great since March of '21.
