Update
We have now taken two longish trips (1000 miles and 2000 miles) with no return of the heavy thumping issue. (I'll skip any discussion of the awning jamming open and a trim piece on the leading edge of the slide ripping off in heavy winds on the I-5 Grapevine in California. Sigh.)
As noted above, the problem was not with the suspension, tires, engine, or transmission. It was a backward installation of wrong spacers in the driveshaft and its connection with the rear differential. The dealership that successfully diagnosed it and brought the M-B tech and warranty people on board is Arrowhead M-B in Peoria, AZ, just outside Phoenix. Given our experience with the local Tucson M-B dealer and RV dealer, we are quire happy trekking back to Arrowhead for M-B related service and any repairs that don't require towing.
