whinning from Engine

I have a new to me 2005 winnebago adventurer 33v, on a workhorse w22 chassis, 8.1 chev vortec engine. I have a whinning noise coming from somewhere in the engine compartment not sure where. Power steering? Transmission? doen't seem to change when turning steering wheel. Just checking for any possible issues I might have. Thanks

Hi Okfine,
Sounds like an alternator bearing to me.

Sometimes the oldest tricks still work pretty well?

Way back when lifter noise was a frequent problem, we used a funnel and hose to "echo-locate" noise like a lifter tapping!
Maybe worth a try--- or not! Basic cheap and easy if it works.

Stick a short section of hose that fits on the end of a funnel. Hold the funnel to cup your ear in it to shut out noise other than coming in the hose, then move the hose around to different parts that are suspect and expect it to get louder when near the noise.

Then if you get one suspect, it may be time to take the belt off that item and see if the noise is totally gone. This works better on some than others, depending how many belts or if one long serp. belt driving it all!

Belt tensioner are probably the most common cause of whines.

Easy test

Touch the tip of a long handle screw driver to any casting near suspected bearing. Place your ear directly on the handle of the screw driver. Any suspect bearing noise will immediately be apparent.
I’ve done it a thousand times, it always works.

Broomstick, or any wooden handle will work very well too. I learned from my grandfather working w\him on the farm.

Yep

As a retired master technician I’ve used this technique for years. Found many difficult to isolate noises that way. Sometimes it is necessary to use a long thin blade approach to steer clear of moving belts and fan blades. Metal also conducts sound better.
