Great Lakes RV trip

We are looking into a 2-3 week trip around the Great Lakes in September. Interested to hear others’ experiences, good places to spend a night, how to avoid the cities, how to see the shorelines but not necessarily drive all the way around all 5 lakes. Of course we are hoping that we will be able to cross the Canadian border by then!

Thanks!

I would consider that to be way too much for one short trip and look for a less punishing trip that allows for more slow travel and stopping to look. To reach what I feel is the better parts, I see something like 2500 miles and that is not fun for us!

But that doesn't figure in how you feel about the trip and what your priorities might be as we all differ. We find one part of the lakes is very much like another except it get more remote and more peaceful as you go West, with the Northern end of Minnesota being our favorite.

Also be aware of how quick and firm the weather changes things in September as many start to close down and move to less remote areas as the season ends. We like nature and often go just to avoid the people but we also find it gets really cold really early and campground services get scarce much earlier than you might find in Mass.

So what do you folks like? That is what we first sort out and then look for how to do that part as the country is way too big to get it all done in one trip.

Couple of places to consider for staying or seeing:

-Aune Osborne Campground in Sault Ste. Marie, MI (watch the freighters go by https://www.saultcity.com/aune-osborn-campground )
-Crisp Point Lighthouse, MI (not in your rig, pretty remote https://www.crisppointlighthouse.org/ )
-Copper Harbor, MI ( https://www.copperharbor.org/ )
-Lakehead Boat Basin, Duluth, MN (an RV park right on a dock on the harbor Welcome to Lakehead Boat Basin Duluth Minnesota Lake Superior )
-Duluth Transportation Museum, Duluth, MN (super railroad museum https://lsrm.org/ )
-Gooseberry Falls State Park, MN
-Two Harbors, MN (find Betty’s Pies https://www.bettyspies.com/ )
-a bit off the route, International Wolf Center, Ely, MN ( https://wolf.org/ )

Have fun!

While visiting Aune Osborne, don't miss the Canadian bush plane museum in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada. Read about it here.

I believe it would help, if you would provide a starting point of your trip. I know two years ago we did the Lake Superior circle. It took almost two week to do that. There is just so much to see and do to rush through it.
