Traveling through Atlanta

Heading from KY to FL on 65 south. Thing about taking the 285 bypass around Atlanta. Have heard go and bad things about that choice. Has anyone traveled that way recently. thanks

I live about 50 miles south of Atl near I75 so travel i285 around east side of Atlanta often. I like to also hit I675 when going that way. I always check traffic on Google Maps and do either I285 or straight through downtown based on traffic. Just stay toward right lanes but watch for exit only. Also I think the express lanes now do EZ Pass for tolls if you have that.

I 65 does not go through Atlanta, I 75 does.

I 65 goes through Nashville, which is just as crowded with traffic as Atlanta though.

We go around the west (airport) side on I-285 most of the time. We always top off with gas so we don't have to stop and try to travel as early as possible. It's normal to be stop-and-go any time of day or night. It's a good trip when you don't lose too much time in Atlanta no matter which way you go.

When we come through Nashville sometimes we stay on I-65 and go southeast on US 83 south of Birmingham. It's a longer slower trip and depends on which part of FL you're going to.

I have had to travel through Atlanta way to many times for work. It is a crap shoot. However Sunday seems to be the best day to slide through. I highly recommend you use Google maps with the traffic settings on, you never know which route is going to be the best.

He said he is taking I65 South, how do you get to Atlanta on I65?

Come across on I-20 or it was a typo, or they could be coming down I-75.

That was my thought or he was considering Atlanta as alternative to I65 route.

I said that wrong, it should read how do you drive through Atlanta on I65? We don't know if he meant I75 or meant Nashville????
Anyway I65 does not come near Atlanta GA.., so at this point everyone is guessing.

I would describe the i75 transit through Atlanta akin to the indy 500 with 10000 of your closest friends except you are in a lumbering behemoth and everyone else is in a race car. It's a test of nerves and brakes. I try to do this late at night and or on a weekend to reduce volume.

I haven't tried it, but some time ago I read a post where this guy uses the HOV lane to go through Atlanta in his MH, he said it's legal. Wonder how many others he torqued off by doing that?

3 months ago we traveled South around Atlanta on the West Loop of 285, on a Thursday afternoon, around 3PM, a little stop and go but all smooth sailing. I do not recall any major issues with the roadway.

Traveling through Atlanta

Born and raised for 21 years in Birmingham - yep a genuine Redneck.

FWIW: First, note spouse and I drive our RV from Florida to Quebec City every year and the shortest route is I95. However, I never (for any reason) drive an automobile nor our motorhome through Atlanta, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, nor New York City. Considering the volume of traffic and the number of reckless drivers in those locations, the risk is just too great. (Don't mean to offend anybody, but it is what it is.) Los Angeles also has a heavy volume of traffic, but the highways are better designed and maintained.

I75 through Florida and southern Georgia is good except for Orlando, but it is better to avoid Atlanta.

Your mileage may vary.

I suggest you Stop Just North of Atlanta for the Night, Then Get up early (5:30 ish depending how far north of Atlanta) so you are Doing I-285 6:30 or so before the real Rush Hour starts.

We Travel From So. Fl. to the Smoky Mountains and Stop South of Atlanta (Mcdonough Ga) in a RV park for the night & then Hit the road before the Traffic starts. (I-675 to I-285 on east side of Atlanta) I no longer can deal with The Atlanta traffic driving our RV during Day time Traffic.
