Water Heater Drain *PLUG*

2021 Micro Minnie 2108DS

Not sure if the brand is Atwood, but I believe it's a 6 gallon hot water heater.

Looking for some replacement drain CAPS. Every thread I've searched mentions a drain PLUG. This unit has a nylon drain cap.

Anyone ever found any of these?

Frank,
I too hate this thing.
Cant tighten it enough by hand to keep it from leaking.
Can’t get a wrench on it.
Please post if you find a source.

It's a Dometic. I haven't found a source for the cap either, so I've taken to not touching it much (the water heater can be drained via suction from the low-point drains on my trailer). I'm hopeful they'll become readily available as more and more trailers get this new design.

Edit to add, if interested: I just open the hot and cold low-point drains for the trailer and then open the relief valve on the water heater. It drains via the cold water low-point drain.

Will do. If no one chimes in, I'll give the dealer a call and see if they have them. Mine leaked a little too and I just took some Craftsman Robogrip pliers I had laying around and tightened a little at a time until it stopped.

Just want to have a few on hand incase it fails. That would make for a bad time if it happened while camping.

This looks like it might be what you're looking for: Dometic 98201 Drain Cap Service Kit.

Excuse my ignorance but isn't it just a 1/2" pipe thread?

Yes, it is just 1/2" NPT female pipe cap. They can be found in brass and galv all day long. Finding them is nylon appears to be more difficult.

Not sure, but: https://smile.amazon.com/RecPro-Plum...811230&sr=8-49

If it's just a 1/2" hose cap, why bother fussing with finding it in nylon? As long as there's a rubber or silicone washer, it'll hold water, so why the heck not?

It's not a plug, it's a female-threaded CAP.

We may be getting way too high tech for me to see the problem, so maybe turning it into some techno speak is what is needed?

If you have a computer cord and can't find a matching plug, you go for a "gender bender" and make it work! So if you have a 1/2 NPT pipe and can't find a cap, do a gender bender trick and use a plug!

Got a pipe and want to use a plug instead of capping it, add a coupling and then go for it!

Yes, it’s not rocket science. Still, it’d be nice to just buy a simple replacement of the stock unit for a spare. When I first looked back in October, they were $17 and only available from one random website. It looks like they are more widely available now, but still expensive. I’ll hit Home Depot if the current one fails. I’ll buy a replacement when they get down closer to $5.

I would go with a brass cap and drop an O-ring into it to seal it up, wouldn't need to be much more than hand-tight. An O-ring would work with the plastic cap as well.

I wonder if the o ring would survive the heat? I guess so...

Hey Frank. We had the same issue on our 2018 2108ds and we got our solution at Gander RV in Mesa Az. last winter. They have a kit with 2 plugs and a wrench to tighten that nasty plug. Same company as Camping World. Hope this helps.

There's a reason that the manufacturer uses nylon rather than brass (or steel). Ever hear of galvanic corrosion?

Hot Water Drain

I recently installed the Camco Hybrid Hot Water Heater and they provided brass fittings, I don't think galvanic corrosion is an issue with two non-ferrous metals.
