Chassis / engine changes 2023 Navion/View

I read a recent review on 2023 Navion/View indicating that in mid year this year, the Mercedes chassis will change from inline 6 cylinder diesel to turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel with higher horsepower and better mileage. I am wondering if anyone has info on when this change will be made fir new orders and what, if any, additional changes can be expected in upcoming Navion/View, whether model year 23 or 24. On our wish list: blind spot monitor; better design in shower area.

We are selling our 2022 Newmar New Aire 3541 and will be placing order for new model Navion/View as soon as it sells. If engine change and/or other design issues are upcoming, we will certainly want to take them into account before ordering.

Any info/comments will be appreciated. Thanks!

I read the same articles regarding the engine changes. I also read in 2025 the MB sprinter will become an all electric vehicle. I can't offer any comments on what is really going to happen but I will say I'm very happy with the performance and fuel economy with our 21 Navion.
My personal preference is never be first in line for the new mode years. Give em a year or two to get the bugs out..

Oh and welcome to the forum.

Thanks, Sparky. We are sold on Navion/View. Have done our research and had plenty of test drives. Have spoken with seven former Class A owners who went to Navion/ View - not one had a regret!

Will want to get more info about upcoming changes, especially the new engine, but we are looking forward to making our move as soon as our present coach sells. Market not cooperating right now!

Not exactly. While they did say that they will only be introducing new models in all electric this doesn't mean they will stop producing existing models in non-electric versions. They said they would be OK with going all electric by the end of the decade "where market conditions allow"

Electric, when ready for Prime Time, should be fabulous - will change the landscape. I'm definitely looking forward to the change. But we are yet a distance from that. It will take at least 2-3 years for the infrastructure to be ready and capable IMHO.

In the meantime, I am happy with the idea of clean diesel with better fuel efficiency and horsepower - just what the new turbocharged 4 cylinder engine for the Navion/View looks like it will have in store. I hope to see info from Winnebago about when it will be available in model year 2023.

Keep in mind that any View will have what ever chassis that is at factory in the build process. As this is a major change from the current 3500 Mercedes, I would expect a year or two from release to WGO selling one. There are many View with a different year say a 18 View on a 17 or even 16 3500.
As far as improved over the current engine and mileage, I would not expect much. HP at 189 on my 15 has never been reached as it comes near redline.

Our Winnebago Navion has a V-6 turbodiesel, not an inline 6. The Sprinter 4-cylinder is an inline engine, both the gas and diesel versions. And, if you look at the 2023 Mercedes Sprinter website, it shows no 6-cylinder at all, only a turbo-gas 4, and 2 turbo-diesel 4s for all new Sprinters. So the V-6 is already gone.

That's no surprise to me. The report I saw was that the new engine would be available not in months but in weeks.

Just saw RV store rep in MI who's a friend and he says that they are getting in Sprinter 3500 chassis units (non Winnie) with the new 4 cylinder diesel engine. They say mileage from Texas where the units they got originated was a solid 18 mpg! Not sure of the brand but definitely the same chassis as the Navion/View. Interesting info.

Winnebago bought Newmar in 2019 … so effectively the same company now.

No wonder why there are quality problems now with Newmar!

We are looking at either a '23 or '24 Navion. All the "still on the lot" 23s have the 6 cyl engine. The '24 that just came in lists the engine as a 3.0L V-6 turbo diesel. I wonder how long it will take for them to start using the 4cyl engine?

They either didn't change the listing to reflect the new engine or they are still using up the 2022 chassis with the 3.0.

We looked at a 2024 Via in July. I’m sure it was on a 2023 Chassis and it had the V-6. I’m hoping Winnebago isn’t bumping up their model years by 2 years instead of the norm of 1 year. We were serious about buying it until their offer on our 2021 22M.

I don't know how that could happen, 2022 was the last model year Sprinter to get the 3.0 OM642 engine. The OM654 that replaces it is not a new engine, it has been around since 2017.

I think you’re right BigB. I incorrectly wrote the Sprinter was a 2023. It had to have been a 2022 since it definitely had the V-6 engine. But the dealer definitely had it listed as a 2024. I questioned them about it, and they concurred it was a 2024 model.

The chassis can be a 2022 but when the coach gets finished it is titled the same year as the buildout, so they probably built a 2024 coach in 2023 on a 2022 chassis. The chassis is usually one year behind the coach but there are cases where it is two years behind.

Not sure what all the fuss is about. Remember you should never buy a new vehicle with a new engine the first year it is out.

If everyone subscribed to that belief we'd still be driving model Ts! Besides that the OM642 has been out for 6 years.
