I think you have touched on your problem. Likely your diverter valve bonnet is installed such that the valve stem reaches its stop before valve cartridge has completely aligned one way or the other.
If you are still under warranty, may be their problem. If not, valve maintenance is easy and intuitive (assuming the valve is accessible).
(Went out and looked at ours) If you can access the valve, remove the valve handle, loosen and remove the bonnet, pull the cartridge (may have neoprene O rings, may be ceramic) Check the stem and cartridge for burrs. Look for burrs inside the valve body. Burrs may impede cartridge rotation. The valve stem stop may or may not be adjustable. If not, a few strokes with a file should give you just that movement to allow the cartridge to align properly.
