DIY - How to add motor oil from 5qt container

The Winnie 2007 Voyage w/ Ford engine, has the oil filler neck pretty
high up within the engine compartment. Filling from quart containers
is annoying, but not a big issue. However there is no reasonable way

to pour oil from a standard 5qt container. There is no room for the
container near the filler neck. Also, the filler neck is recessed
back a bit from the front, so there is no way to get a typical funnel

in a position to help. What is needed is a funnel with an unusually long hose.
But, this is a cumbersome two person job: one person to hold the
funnel, so it extends up and out in front of the open hood, and

another person, preferably on a ladder, to pour in the oil.
There must be a better way.

I assume other Winnie models have a similar issue.
Ideas?

Immediately after buying our 2016 Minnie Winnie/E450 I also saw that potential issue. I bought a square-ish red funnel (about 6" square) with a "tail" about a foot long. Since the "tail" diameter was quite a bit smaller than even the base of the funnel, it was rather unstable and just putting a quart bottle in it was problematic.

My solution was to cut the funnel short, about 2 - 3 inches, and glue on a 6" section of reinforced vinyl tubing whose outside diameter snuggly fit the engine's fill tube, and an inside dimeter that reasonably fit the stub on the funnel. The stub was tapered which is why the extension had to be glued on.

It works like a charm. Not enough, of course, to support the weight of a 5 quart jug of oil, but at least its a stable target large enough to hit fairly easily while your pouring it.

Oil Funnel attachment

I bought this attachment with attached hose which screws into the 1 qt oil container. It has a twist to open/close. Still would recommend a second set of hands, but was able to add the oil pretty easily. Had to add only a quart at a time because the 5 gallon can does not clear the engine access.
Flow tool 10106B/6 trans fluid and gear oil on/off filler on Amazon for under $4 (currently on sale normal $12). Found a similar one on the shelf at Walmart.

I just looked on Amazon for the funnel I used. Its a FloTool 10705 Giant Quick Fill Funnel.

Flow tool giant funnel

I also own one of those, but isn’t necessary with the flow tool attachment. The hose was long enough to reach the oil fill.

I use a harbor freight battery operated pump. At 9.95 i bought two just in case the first one crapped out in the middle of an oil change.

At most auto oil change places they pour the oil from the 5 gal container into a smaller container with a flexible pipe built into it and they add the oil a qt at a time that way.

I bought a small hand pump at the auto parts store that screws onto the oil container and I pump away. Takes a few min, but no spills. I had horrible luck with funnels, this worked great for me.

Was wondering how you get 12v to those likely short leads to a battery ?

All my mh batteries are under the step, 15-20' from front where oil/trans fillers are.

I guess if possible you could park a vehicle at front and use its battery but would like a much better/safer way to use the pump - the pump i have has 12" or less long 12v cables.

A pump seems a nice way of doing this.

ps: to OP, i just pour from 5gal jug to a 1qt empty oil container, in my case 7 times !! Fun Fun Fun !!

Add oil

I put the oil in a 2 liter soda bottle with a funnel and then it pours in nicely. Takes a bit of time but no spills, and doesn't cost anything.

Since oil costs about the same in quart bottles I use these.

And the secret to adding oil in tight spaces is to find a 20+" DEF funnel in the trash at any fuel stop. These accordion type funnels are often thrown away by DEF users and they work great as they have a self venting cap. So keep your eyes looking out for a few of these you will no longer be spilling fluid in the future.

I also use them to put in my diesel additives.

Heck, if you only need 5-7 qts I'd do it a qt at a time. Doesn't take long. I have to pour 6gals in....
