2008 Journey Ceiling Panel Issue
I have a 2008 Journey, the bedroom aft overhead pnl some of the fabric has begun to delam from the foam. The strip that hides the fasteners that holds the pnl up are covered with a plastic strip. Question is how do I remove that strip? I tried but it appears to be slid over the metal strip. if you try to pry the plastic strip off it simply cracks and breaks. So I'm looking for suggestions.

You can try heating the plastic strips with a hair dryer, makes it a bit softer, but in many cases taking an older plastic cover off results in breaks and splits. Winnebago does sell them along with replacement aluminum strips they attach to.

AZ Expert put in new roof panels on a 20 year old Winnie that he found on Winnebago. You may want to check out this video and links to Amazon in the video description to the roof panels and glue he used.

I could be wrong, but I think the OP was referring to the vinyl and foam on the inside of the ceiling.

Yes, that’s right. On this job he also had to replace the inside ceiling panels. I should have said ceiling panels rather than roof panels in my first comment.

Too bad he didn't take us through the process of replacing the old vinyl ceiling material. I have spoken to Winnebago in Iowa, and they quoted $1800 to $2000 to replace one 4' x 8 ' piece of ceiling material. I did try to re-glue the one side, but that only lasted a few months till it started coming down again. My next thought before spending that amount of money is to puck up an additional aluminum extrusion and plastic cap to install between the existing ones. This would cut the unsupported fabric down from 4' to 2'. Then on the sides at the wall screw in some stained to match shoe mold to support the vinyl at the walls. There may still be some sagging , but it would not be as noticeable as it is now. If I ever get around to doing this I will post pictures.

Wow, that’s a lot! It tells me they don’t want those jobs. I imagine they can get really involved. Wishing you the best on your repair job.

I can't imagine they do want those types of projects, After removing every light, vent and detector in the way, the vinyl is removed. Then all of the old foam and glue must be scraped off of the Luan board and than cleaned so the contact cement will adhere to it. I also imaging it is very tedious work making sure the new panel goes up perfectly straight.

Tim, we are doing exactly what you described, but We are just painting the Luan board after all the contact cement has been removed. Coat of Kilz and then bathroom ceiling paint. looks pretty good. 2008 Journey...

My RV has the same problem, I'm going to use white or beige thumbtacks in a button tuft pattern to hold the fabric up.

Are you using any sort of textured paint to help cover up any imperfections? Would love to see some pictures of the final product if possible.

Ceiling panels
Will post some pictures here in the next few days. We are using regular paint but used spackling in any imperfect areas first then sanded.

Looking forward to it, would certainly be much less expensive than what WB wants to do this work.

On my 2006 Journey the ceiling was starting to droop. I bought some 1/8" x 1 1/2" slats at the hardware store and screwed the slats to the ceiling to hold up the vinyl material. It has been holding fine for almost 2 years now. While this repair may not be perfect, I an not interested in spending big $$$ or many, many hours trying to replace the vinyl.

Good information also. I ordered the aluminum extrusion and vinyl batten to install at the midway point between the two existing ones that are on the ceiling in my bedroom area. I am thinking if the unsupported distance is shortened from 48" to 24" maybe it will be supported better. I plan to stain some shoe mold and install it on both sides of the bedroom area to dress it up and also hold the vinyl better.
I do have a question and have also posed this to Customer Care. What length screws did you use, I want to make sure I don't get into any wiring that is installed above the ceiling, I am not sure how much Styrofoam is left after they route it out for their wiring paths.

The screws I used were either 1" or 1 1/4". I'm not sure how far up a screw would have to go to hit the wires.
On my ceiling the max spacing distance between the slats is about 16", most is about 14" and where the vinyl was already sagging the distance is about 8".

I did hear back from Customer care and they suggested nothing linger than 3/4" so that is what I got.
I installed an extra support as shown in this picture
and installed the new plastic baton on the aluminum support as show here
Now to figure out what to do at the walls.

Was planning to use some shoe mold for trim at the walls and hold the vinyl up at the sidewalls, but I think there is a huge aluminum piece (structural) that I would have to use self tapping screws to attach to. Not sure that is a wise move.
