2012 or newer wrangler would be the way to go. Sahara model is a nice mix of amenities and rough road ability. Unless you plan to go rock drawing, you would be wasting money on a Rubicon(heavy axles, low gear tranny, auto disconnect sway, etc.). I would suggest the hard top for security and towing down the road. If you do not need the extra space, you do not need the unlimited (4 door). The 2 door is a fun drive and get you where you want to go. After 2012, the 6 cylinder motor was improved and is great. Not the very lightest toad, but you will be happy and they hold their value well. jmo - mark

We towed a 1999 Suzuki Vitara behind our 03 Adventurer for 7 seasons and about 70K miles. Automatic/4 wheel drive. Great Little car. Now towing a 2006 Jeep Liberty, another great car.

We have a 2015 jeep cherokee latitude 4x4 . Right at 4000 lbs. It's great. We also use this for our second car. We looked at the wrangler and decided against it because for a second car it's too uncomfortable. Cost was a factor also. We purchased the latitude new for what a basic no frill wrangler was used.

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Dodge Dakota 4X4.
OK, I named a few but there are others, both new and used.

We tow a 2007 Jeep Liberty 4x4, no problems so far. We tow it behind our Forest River Class C.

Scott,

Have you heard any news about Jeep changing the non-tow rating for the Renegade? It seems like a perfect choice for a small toad, but for some reason the 9-speed isn't towable (?).

My '05 CRV toad is slated for our nearly 16 year old grandson, so we're shopping.

[QUOTE=FIRE UP;2908987]deesnest,
Well Sir, as you can read, there's a few 4x4s on the market that can be flat towed. But by far, obviously the most common one is the Jeep. Now, just which "jeep" to choose for your endeavor, well, there's some things either we (as the ones trying to help here) or you, the one that will be ultimately using it, need to know before you really narrow it down. This of course is depending IF you choose a Jeep in the first place.

Cost is a driving factor for many. And that means older. Just how old, well, it depends on what you're willing to spend. 99.9999% of the time, newer means better technology, more efficient, better fuel mileage, better suspension, and quite a bit more. But, newer means more cost. If cost is not a factor, then, you now have to determine what level of a Jeep you might like.

With the Renegade the issue is not the transmission but the 4WD transfer case. There is no Neutral position for towing like the bigger Jeeps.

Any wrangler from 2000 on will do almost any off roading you want except extreme rock crawling.

If your Xterra has a transfer case that you can shift in neutral I would install a tow plate and use it. I had a 2002 Nissan Frontier 4x4 Automatic. Even though it didn't say in its user guide whether it can be towed all four wheels down. I did quite a bit of search on the web and discovered that others have done it. So, I tried it and towed it for several years. When you are ready to tow, just place the transfer case in Neutral and go.
All the best!

It depends on what you are going to use the four wheel drive for. If you are just gonna drive down some dirt road, most 4x4 will do the job. If your talking about serious 4 wheeling then do the Jeep wrangler.

If you weren't on the opposite end of the world as defined by US RVers, I'd offer to sell you my 93 Geo Tracker. We bought a Jeep Liberty and will be towing that as soon as I get the base plate installed.

We towed the Tracker for several years with our 2006 WGO View on a diesel Sprinter chassis and never had a problem.

Towing 2000 4-runner, standard trans with neutral. must use extra key in ignition in off position so steering does not lock. Around 4200#, makes good 4/4 and nice off to town rig for four people plus luggage space if needed. EZ install base plate and most come towing equipped so bikes go on back.

Your newer Xtrerra must be all automatic with no separate transfer case selector. I actually wanted to get a Honda Ridgeline - ironic that you can tow Honda CRV but not a Ridgeline. Finally got me a Ford Explorer SportTrac. The best vehicle I have had for towing. It is an 8 cylinder, thus gets a terrible gas mileage in town, but great vehicle to tow.

Two to tow

I have pulled a 2012 Honda CRV for 3 yrs. and like it very much. After towing on a 2000 mile trip over some dirt roads in Idaho wife and I decided we didn't want to pull the CRV over rough gravel roads again.
I bought a 2001 Nissan Frontier p/u extended cab, 5 speed, 4 cyl engine, 2 wheel drive to pull in the future. It only weighs 3200 lbs. and I can carry a MH spare tire in the bed or my ATV. My 2003 Adventure doesn't have any room to carry a spare. I felt spare tire room a bonus with the small p/u although I gave up passenger room. I normally haven't worried about a spare in Idaho and surrounding states but trips to east coast or Alaska I want a spare.

I have heard you can do the same with a Fiat 500L. Hookup and go, no need to stop and shift the tranny back and forth. And no speed limits. Just go. That's what I am looking for at this time. A guy that told me would sell me his Saturn, just backed out. He wants to keep it to drive.
