Monterey area in January - Trip Report

We got away to the coast in January and enjoyed great weather and beautiful views. Here’s our trip report.

Hi Al & Deb,
What a great report! The Bixby Creek Bridge reminds me of the photos I have seen of Gustave Eiffel's Garabit Viaduct Bridge. Designed in 1885, the railroad bridge is still in use today.
Thanks, Eagle5

Wow, that is a beautiful bridge that was built to last. Thanks for the photo!

Nice trip and great reporting. My wife has a good friend that grew up in Carmel. We hope to visit the area someday and your pictures provide a strong incentive.

I've drive the coast highway from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbers several times with an RV. Here are a couple of thought for those tempted to make the trip. If you are traveling south, you are on the ocean/cliff side of the road, but it is easier to access most of the scenic turnouts. If you are traveling south to north, you are on the safer uphill side of the road, but it is more difficult to enter and leave the scenic turnouts. Going south gives your copilot a better view. The view won't be as important to you because you will be to busy driving.

Since The 1 ends in Leggett, CA, continue on up The 101 to Ferndale and visit The Lost Coast.

In Ferndale, Mattole Road loop takes you along the coastline, from Ferndale and ending in Humboldt Redwood State Park.

We accidentally stumbled upon it in our travels years ago. On Ocean Ave in Ferndale watch for the sign, "Capetown - Petrolia." The road will start out as Weldcat Ave and turn into Mattole Road.

If you take it in reverse, from Humbolt Redwoods to Ferndale you will be looking over your shoulder at the wonderful views.

Happy trails.

p.s., take the ride in the TOAD, much more enjoyable and no white knuckles.
