Packing of wheel bearings?

How often should the packing of wheel bearings be done? Every season? Every so many 1,000 miles? I upgraded from a pop-up (that I maintained over 12 yrs) to a Micro-Minnie 2106DS and want to do the best maintenance schedule w/o being anal and over spending. I'm not a rich man and would appreciate sound advice, not the spend, spend and spend, if you know what I mean. Thanks in advance!

Hi Seron,
Unless you submerge the bearings in water, you can go at least 30,000 miles between repackings.
Welcome to the forum.

I liked to repack at around 25K with my trailers but would put them up on jacks every 10k or so to check play/brakes. YMMV.

I'm getting the impression that between 25-30k is a mean average to repack bearings. Thanks for the info. I really intend to keep this TT in top shape and info like this is so very helpful!

Mentioning the trailer's brakes, my brother in law had an expensive lesson in settings with his trailer's brakes. He'd been running them set at 9 on his control, and ended up replacing both the drums, and shoes; which was quite pricy, as the shoes also contain the electromagnets to actuate the brakes. (The magnets pull against the drum's sidewall to activate the shoes.) He also replaced the wheel bearings, for a complete reset, and I think he spent something like $2,000 for the two axles. He now knows he should run them at something like a setting of 5.

Thanks for the electronic brake setting info. I have mine set at 7 and will make the adjustment. It could be that the setting may be subjective to the weight of the TT but I'm glad that you brought this up. It's an important thing to be made aware of and monitored for the reasons you brought up. Thanks for the info!!

Actually, etrailer.com says every 12 months/12,000 miles.
reference: https://www.etrailer.com/faq-trailer...-schedule.aspx

FWIW, other trailer axle mfgrs. recommend the same interval for standard axle bearings.

Just going by my 10 years of towing TTs all over the USA, I lean toward the 25-30K interval for a full tear down and repack. Of course, it pays to monitor temps and strange sounds coming from the wheels.

The 12K or yearly interval reminds me of the old standard 3000 mile oil change that was set mostly by Jiffy Lube... not needed for many years. IMHOTI!!

I do jack my wheels up each year and inject new grease as I spin the wheels.. never had a problem if it is done by the instruction's of the manufacturer.

If you can do the work yourself Amazon has everything you need. I just replaced everything but the drums for about $400.00. Drums are a problem as they cost $70.00 each to get them turned and $130 each to replace. Mine were not that bad so I did not turn them. Previous owner never even checked the brakes and the grease and pads were pretty bad.

how do you just inject new grease vs repack? Seems like you would want to at least do that every year, the full repack is expensive, but then again, much cheaper than tires all the damage that a locked up wheel would cause at hwy speeds!

Some trailers have a grease zerk fitting on the outside of the hub. Attaching a grease gun and giving a couple pumps will help grease the bearings. This is not as good as a packing the wheel bearings but does help. It is mainly for boat bearings as a couple pumps will put pressure inside a hot hub after a tow to the lake. A hot hub backed into cold water will suck water into the bearing

This is a copy N paste from https://www.dexteraxle.com/user_area...ctionSheet.pdf
Quote: Bearing Lubrication - Grease
See recommended lubrication specifications on last page.
Along with bearing adjustment, proper lubrication is essential to the
proper function and reliability of your trailer axle. Bearings should be
lubricated every 12 months or 12,000 miles. The method to repack
bearing cones is as follows_"

No-one must follow the mfgrs. recommendation/ instructions, unless they want to maintain the factory warranty and provide for the safety of their family.
