12v or 120v tank heaters? 1998 Itasca Sunrise

Hi folks -

Tried searching and couldn't find much opinion on this..

I have a 98 Tasca Sunrise - it has a tank heater system, appears to be both 12v and 120v, from the prior owner who made alot of things very complicated :-) Including, the tank heater setup - add that to the fact there are some 120v wires running back there simply cut (with no tape/wire nut to protect) I just want to rip out and replace the gray and black water tank heaters, as well as add a freshwater tank heater.

What's the logic on using 12v or 120v heaters? Is there any? I am plugged in 100% of the time (RV is being used while house is being built) and also have a decent battery setup (with 300w of solar atop, but it goes get covered by snow at times).

I feel 120v is the way to go here, as it will require less conversion (err, non at all) from my source power. Versus, the 12v would need 120 coming in, convert to 12v with my Victron converter, then heat.

Any thoughts on this?

thanks
Mike

I think you'll find most of us with any kind of tank heaters are using 12v tank heaters. In fact, I've never heard of anyone using 120v tank heaters. Which is likely why you couldn't find anything when searching for details on which is preferred.

One of the challenges of buying a 25-year old RV is figuring out what the heck the crazy previous owners have done to "improve" the RVs systems.
