Performance in terms of acceleration is a hp vs weight issue.
For example: My 32,000 CVGR RV with a 350HP Cummins has a ratio of 350/32,000=
0.0109... and I consider that to be rather unimpressive. ...But not quite "a dog."
You can increase HP & torque with and Ag-Diesel "performance module" very easily; but if you go this route I strongly recommend you a few other things first:
* Verify you have an Allison 3000MH tranny that can handle your increase in torque.
* First install a FASS or AirDog 12V fuel pump to change your vacuum deliver fuel injection system to a a positive pressure system.
* Research the best way to add a FASS or AirDog to your Cummins injection system. ...I think HPFR systems began in 2007 and newer coaches.
Note: HPCR systems (aka CAPS-II) injection system often are found in 2004.5-2006 coaches; and 1998.5-early 2004 coaches have CAPS injection systems.
==> Each of these systems have a different Ag-Diesel performance module, and part number, and it will often cost you less if you have a newer coach.
==> Most RVs have 1 year older engine. I.e., my 2004-Itasca-Horizon came with a 2003 Cummins ISC-350.
So in my RV, and after I have driven 17,000 miles with the Ag-Diesel 12100 performance module installed, I can tell you I really like the extra 70HP, and I don't recommend you go beyond 420HP. Why? ...No need in my weight class, and 450HP is too close the the maximum rated torque my Allison 3000MH tranny is rated to handle.
==> I now have 420HP which give me a HP/Weight ratio of
0.0131 and my RV really performs well -- even towing a car.
EGT PYROMETER CONSIDERATIONS
I highly recommend you install a Glowshift digital EGT gauge ($125) and not an analog gauge. The digital gauge will be easier to read; and I recommend you install "down low" by your left knee. This will allow you to read it with a glance, and the gauge lights will not bother you at night.
You might also install a Glowshift fuel pressure gauge ($150) and get the double bezel to hold both gauges.
Note: In the beginning I really thought I did not need an EGT gauge, because I just thought I could "keep my foot off the pedal," but after I installed the EGT I realized how easy it is to exceed 1350F and you really do not want to do that for more than 10-15 seconds. Anyway, with an EGT I now drive my RV different and I highly recommend it. And it's not hard to install.
These threads will give you more information on both FASS and Ag-Diesel upgrades. However, most of this information targets Cummins-CAPS upgrades (pre-2005), but there are a number of subjects I think you will find helpful to your upgrade process.
