Astoria, Oregon Trip Report

We finished up our RV trip to the Pacific Northwest in Astoria, and here’s our trip report. Oh, and the Salmon fish and chips is amazing!

Very nice, that area was one of the best trips I ever made. I was fascinated at the maritime museum, especially the story of the special pilots who bring the ships in to that dangerous harbor where over 2,000 wrecks lay at the bottom. The Columbia dumps over a quarter million cubic feet of water into the Pacific every second, that's two million gallons of fresh water per second!! Hard to believe there is a shortage of fresh water anywhere!
My most memorable part of the trip was the town of Seaside, and Salt Pub in Ilwaco, WA where we sat on the second floor watching the boats coming in, among them the one carrying fresh clams which they made my clam chowder with. We were forced to wait and keep drinking beer till the clams were unloaded and cooked

As someone who thinks the best way to serve wild caught salmon is sashimi style, battering and deep frying it is a travesty. I bet it was really, really good though.


We're probably going to visit family in Medford next year, we might have to spend a night or two in Astoria. Great pics, thanks.

Haha, to each his own I guess! :-) I’ll choose the battered and fried one anyway, but I guess people can develop a taste for anything!

BigB, thanks for the info…it really is amazing. And thanks for the tip about Salt Pub! I’d love to be forced to drink a beer as I wait for the clams to be unloaded. :-)

Astoria has such a rich history, and no matter how many times I go down there, it always seems there is something new to discover. Yet another interstellar report; great job!

He didn’t say it was the best salmon he’d every had, just the best fish and chips…

I lived in Portland back in 78-79, and we used to make the trip out the sunshine Hwy, 26, I think, to Cannon Beach. Would always return up the coast and through Astoria, such a nice area. As for Salmon, I found myself near Fairbanks AK, in 79, stationed at Eielson, AFB. Went to a friends house and they offered me Salmon, I made a yucky face and the host said let me guess, the only salmon you have had is Salmon pattys. I nodded yes and they convinced me to give some fresh salmon a try. With that I was hooked, and had salmon anytime I could.

In 1982, I took a trip down the Yukon River to the small fishing town of Rampart. While there I had salmon in every form possible from smoked and cooked to raw which the natives call Squaw Candy. So Rich but so good.

Met two dog mushers on that trip, George Atla and Susan Butcher. Was a trip I shall never forget.

Sorry to run on interesting how a single word can conjure up so many find memories.

Wow, thanks for sharing some great memories! And, I agree that once you try fresh caught salmon you’ll be “hooked”.
