Broken Tri-Mark door handle

Posted 11-16-2021 at 03:24 PM by HiBanky

My 2005 Journey and probably many other RV has a Tri-Mark 17217 Exterior Door Latch. One sunny day I reach up and pulled the handle only to find it did nothing to open the door. No amount of fiddling around with it did anything to give me access to the coach. Fortunately I left a window unlock and with the aid of the ladder I left out, I manage to get inside to open the door. With out hesitation, I removed and disassembled the door handle and quickly found the cause.
There is a boss cast into the outer plate that stops the actuating lever at the return position. If the lever is allowed to return too far it will not reach the mechanism that releases the door latch. The outer plate is cast aluminum as is the boss being part of it. The lever is steel and has sharp edges. Eventually the lever wears on the boss until it returns too far. A new plate is the obvious fix but being the cheep fix it if you can kind of guy, I found an “in the field” repair. Use a length of wire, preferably stainless steel” and wrap it around the boss filling the gap caused by the wear. Use pliers to tightly wrap the wire so it can not come off with use. Hundreds of openings later, it still works.
