I'm the new owner of a 2005 Journey with the basement A/C heat pump unit. The option in campgrounds with hook ups to run the heat pump for heat without burning propane is very appealing but my heat pump makes a loud droning noise while running - loud enough to wake us up from sleep. Has anyone reading this had this problem or heard of it? Is this a common issue?
we have the electric heat option on our roof units and both the heat and AC are loud. so if it's really cold i'll run the lp furnace otherwise to take the chill off we run the fireplace which does a good job of heating the entire RV. we also carry a small 120-VAC 1500-watt electric heater which we set up in the bedroom for those 'in-between times'.
We have a new to us unit with the basement ac/heat system and it sounds normal to us after we just came from a similar unit with 2 roof top units, hope someone can help you, bill.
I have the basement air/heat pump in my 2002 Suncruiser 35U (new to us). I have the heat pump running right now to keep the temp stable while I install new flooring and it doesn't sound objectionable, just like an air conditioner. We haven't slept in the rig yet so I'm not sure what it's going to be like with it under our bed.
Can you tell if it's a mechanical noise or air flow noise. That would help narrow it down. If airflow, something could be loose and vibrating or there may be a restriction somewhere.
I wouldn't think it would matter if it was in A/C or heater mode since the process is the same, the heat flow is just reversed.
It is a bit noisy but that works as white noise for me to drown out the DWs snoring. The AC and the Heat Pump both are noisy. The gas furnace is not nearly as noisy.
All I can say is in our old rig the roof airs were noisy as well. I don't mind.

Despite my previous comments about our's being OK, we just got back from our first trip in our 2002 Suncruiser 35U and our's ran fine in heat pump mode for several hours and then got pretty noisy. Based on what I've read since getting home, it could be the squirrel cage fan rubbing, a bearing or the motor. Here's a link that may be helpful:
