Thanks to all who replied. After searching SentrySafe.com I found the model of our safe and learned that I needed to end the combination with a pound sign # rather than an asterisk * as instructed. ...

Thanks for that info! I looked but I can't find the battery access. The safe is bolted in the cabinet. I only have access to the front.
