I have been carrying an unmounted spare in my toad for the motorhome for 7 years now. My primary concern has been that I didn't want to get stranded somewhere remote where I could not get access immediately to a properly sized spare. There have been shortages in the past of the tire size I use, so I wanted to be safe rather than sorry. I also didn't want to get caught having to pay an exorbitant price on short notice for a tire from a supplier who was the only game in town.
I have heard that sometimes roadside service balks at replacing a tire if you do not use their supplied tire if they have one available, but I have not experienced that dilemma
