2020 View 24D Coach Door

Opening/closing of coach door has become harder to open and close and it will creak/pop.
I talked to Winnabago customer care about this issue. Evidently Lippert Ind. furnishes door but buys it from a third party. That third party used aluminum spacers on each of the three hinges and these spacers may not be compatible with the hinge itself which is resulting in stiffness/binding when opening/closing of door.

Winnabago says there will NOT be any recall/service campaign on this issue.
The Winnabago tech is checking with their parts dept. if replacement hinges are available for me to install.

Has any one else experienced this coach door issue?

I'm a fairly new owner (22D). I've been studying this coach and long term issues we may both encounter. This is one of them.

It is a known problem with material incompatibility in the hinges. A galvanic corrosion problem. There is only one solution. You have to service these hinges about every six months with anti-seize lubrication. One hinge at a time. I hope you can get them out.

Here is a pretty good description of the problem and a way to maintain the hinges:

The part you want starts at 3:30.

We've had our 2021 View 24D since June of 2020 and haven't had any issues with the hinges or done any lubrication (unless Lichtsinn does that as part of their annual maintenance).

The only issue we've had with the entry door is with the lock mechanism. We've had it break twice due to plastic pieces in the lock mechanism breaking off. The lock is at great risk of breaking if anyone attempts to open the door while someone else is also trying to open it from the other side OR if the automatic locking mechanism runs simultaneously.

I am having this issue with my 2022 View 24d. Did you get this resolved? Was the lubrication suggested by Lippert the solution?

Lubrication didn’t help so I had the one causing my issue replaced. Problem solved

I just got a used 2020 view. Same problem. Bottom hinge. I’m trying to get it off but does not want to come off from the frame of the door. Looks like they glued or used a strong tape on back side. Did you have this issue.

I was able to use a 1 inch putty knife and a hammer to get the door hinge off the door frame without any damage. They really use some strong adhesive. Since the putty knife was not quite long enough I did use a baby crow bar for the rest. Waiting on new hinge. Hopefully it is the whole thing. Thanks for everyone's input.

Hi - Does anyone have any theories as to why some doors are affected, and others seem to be fine?

We've got a '21 View, and to my knowledge, the door seems to be working as if it was new. Or, am I kidding myself? A problem is just lurking around the corner?

Initially I was thinking that the manufacturer likely replaced the aluminum hinges with something more compatible with the hinge shaft, but I see newer rigs are seeing the same problem...

Thanks,

Cheers

We've been talking to La Mesa RV for about 2 months trying to get replacement hinges. They got the top and bottom within a couple of weeks, as they estimated, but the middle hinge is on backorder until "early September", so we don't have any chance of getting our door fixed until then. This has greatly impacted our ability to enjoy/use our RV.

I would say that the reason that some see this issue within weeks, others within months, and others within years is due to their local climate and conditions. Whether it is kept indoors, humidity levels, sun, etc.

I'm worried that these hinges are going to be increasingly hard to find, potentially requiring a complete door retrofit in the future.

Hi again - I posted back in June with "the door seems to be working as if it is new". Well, it has been proven that I certainly was kidding myself.

I started wondering why we have not had to bungee chord our door open to stop it from closing on the screen door when it gets windy. And then, I started to question why the door has started to feel heavy when opening and closing. And that led to "C'mon, why would our door be any different than those that have been having problems with the hinges seizing up?"

So, using the manufacturers info that Big Boy linked to above, I started into the lubrication procedure. It started off all pretty straightforward, and if I had not run into issues with seized hinges, I would have been done in under 30 minutes. Three of the six hinges slid off of their pins with little to no effort, two of the hinges were quite a workload, and one of the hinges required some serious "on the workbench" persuasion. All in all, a two hour job.

That last one was seized to its pin, and in the process of trying to slide it off, I noticed that the progress I thought was occurring was actually the entire pin being removed from the pin holder on the door frame. Have a look at the picture below to see what I mean. I was lucky here, because I had already serviced the hinge below and the pin slid out of the door frame pin holder fairly easily. I had to put the pin in a vise, and work the hinge off with quite a bit of time and effort.

All of my hinges were free to rotate (some requiring considerable force) away from the door when I got the # 27 torx screws off; there was no adhesive of any kind. I thought there was at first, but found that the hinges that looked liked they were affixed to the door were the ones seized to its pin.

I tried to clean up the pins as best I could with 1200 grit paper, before I used the Q-Tip procedure to get a liberal amount of anti-seize compound down in the hinge shafts.

For the hinges that are facing up and have pin caps on the ends, I'd recommend putting some tape over them as you work the hinge back on to its pin. While trying to get the air in the shaft to vent at the bottom as I dropped on the hinge, I blew one cap off ... last I heard, it landed somewhere in the garage - never to be seen again.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be thrilled about doing this procedure a couple of times a year. But, on the plus side, if we can keep the hinges in good shape it should be a quick and easy habit to get in to. Too bad these doors are proving to be a good idea gone bad, as they look great and we have enjoyed their features.

Cheers,

Sorry to hear that you are now seeing issues with your hinges. Your description of how you noticed the door hinge behavior changing over time is very familiar to me. It starts out with such a small change, you don't even think that it's a problem. But if you let it go, it gets to be a big problem.

Are your hinges working like new after all of your efforts?

Yes, thanks, forgot to mention that. My hinges are all free again, and the door will definitely have to be bungee'd again to keep it from blowing in the wind.

I have not found my pin cap that shot off; I'll have to give that some thought. Sure don't want to get water in there...

Cheers,

I have a 2023 Winnebago View and these doors along with the window they put in are JUNK! Last week coming back from Colorado our door window started rattling really bad. I pulled over and inspected and come to find out it's not really glass it's some type of plastic and it is only help on with adhesive tape. Luckily, it is still under warranty, but I wish they would bring the old doors back and do a recall. I never had issues with my 2016 Winnebago View door.

I believe that they brought the old doors back in late-2023+ Views.

I just received word that all three hinges were finally delivered to my dealer. I've got an appointment scheduled for mid-September to finally get the door fixed (along with 2 recalls and some exterior re-caulking).

Here's what happened to my hinge after we used it just a little bit more. The top hinge snapped, and then it was easy to open and close the door again! We didn't use it after that for fear that the whole thing could fail or fall off.

After many months of waiting, our dealer finally got the hinges. They are installed now and it is ready for pickup tomorrow. Hopefully, everything is back to working order and these new hinges won't seize up.

FYI the replacement hinges are gloss white instead of silver. They work great so far...
