Hi Ted,
It could be a bad gasket, but have you replaced the original gas cap with an aftermarket gas cap?
I would also check to see if any fuel vapor condensation return lines are disconnected. There should be a box located somewhere with four lines running to the top edges of your fuel tank, or something like that.

I had this issue on one of my cars and a new gas cap from NAPA solved the problem. I replaced my Vista gas cap with a locking Stant cap and haven't had any issues with it. I'd start with a new cap for 8-15 bucks and see if that fixes it.

I ended up with a carquest locking gas cap. Had the same part number as the stant locking cap. The message did not go out on first fill up to 3/4 of a tank. On next fill up I got over that and noticed message was gone. I saved old cap just in case but I am gonna go with a faulty o ring. Thank you all

Hi Ted,
Glad you have it fixed with a new "O" ring. On my Minnie Winnie, I could never find a locking gas cap, so I just use the original equipment cap. Maybe someday a company might make a cap to properly fit my E-450.
Thanks for the report.

It was an actual locking gas cap for a ford. Figured gas caps should be universal at least by brand. The folks at store just looked up a gas cap for a Ford F350. It fit and worked. I figured Ford chassis Ford gas cap. I would have preferred just an o ring but the one on my gas cap looks very specific so I didn’t want to try just any old o ring. Time will tell.

This is the cap I bought, it fits and I haven't had any issues so far.

Fits a Focus and my F-53, which would seem to reinforce your theory that a Ford gas cap is a Ford gas cap.
