Sprinter EGR

After multiple issues, including several experiences with "limp mode", I had my 2015 Via (2014 Sprinter) towed (Thank you FMCA!!) to a Mercedes Sprinter Center.

We are the second owner of a rig with less that 29,400 miles on the odometer.

I was advised the warranty had expired in January (we purchased it used in November). The initial quote to replace a failed EGR valve was of $2,100 P&L.

We were told Mercedes Dealers are not allowed to clean an EGR valve. They will only replace them.

I was much relieved to later be informed that Mercedes had extended the warranty on this model's EGR valve, and that the work was completed at No Charge.

Although they said my faulty valve did NOT have carbon build up, my online research found an interesting YouTube video of a mechanic discussing the need to clean the Sprinter EGR valve every 15-20K miles due to carbon buildup and demonstrating how to do it. His Sprinter was a 2013.

The shop I was at charges $174/hr labor.

The Sprinter emission system works better if you use only Mercedes spec oil and if you do not idle the engine for more than a couple of minutes. The DEF engines really do not rely too much on the EGR valve for pollution control as the older engines did.

Is this issue known to Mercedes? It almost sounds like the issue VW had with their diesels in the early 2000's.

What years did the warranty extension apply to?

Did Mercedes make changes in the intervening model years to reduce/eliminate the problem?

It is covered under the 5 year emissions warranty. Some states have extended it to 7 years.
