2003 Itasca Horizon Low Coolant Alarm?

Hi Folks,

Coming back from a trip this weekend in my '03 Itasca Horizon, the low water alarm came on after a few miles. I might have seen this pop on briefly in the past, but not for some time. This time it stayed on solid. Coolant temp looks okay, sticking to about 170-175. The level in the overflow tank was down a bit, well below the MAX line, but above the MIN line as well. I added some coolant to see if it changed anything, but it didn't and I continued on my trip home since the temp was holding in the normal range.

When I got home I added a substantial amount of coolant mix, like 2.5 gallons since the level wasn't rising much in the overflow tank when adding it. It didn't fix the warning and when I stopped at the gas station, I found it was leaking coolant, though I could not tell from where.

I found posts in other forums saying this could indicate the coolant overflow tank sensor is bad or corroded and I will replace it if that is the problem, but I'm wondering why my overflow tank level didn't change appreciably when adding that much coolant and it started leaking like that. Was I supposed to open a valve when adding coolant through the overflow tank?

Thanks!

First locate the coolant leak source, then fix it properly. When this happened it likely left an air pocket in the coolant system somewhere. That and low coolant can only be fixed after the leak source is eliminated.

Unless the overflow tank was overflowing itself, the added coolant was entering the engine cooling system. There is no valve to turn.

FIND THAT LEAK!
