oil for Onan QG 3600 LP
HI,
Looked in all the manuals, and cannot find the oil that would be
recommended for this generator.
Only have 5 hours on it, but would like to find out what is best to use.
The books says nothing about synthetics. Probably just 10W-30
It is an LP generator, 3600 rpm, 3.6 KW
Anybody have any thoughts?
Dave

Officially they recommend their own brand of oil
OnaMax Oil 15W40 - part number 326-5336
I use Mobile 1 in mine.
I think the first oil change is at 25 hours. The next at a lengthy 125 hours.
Those hour numbers are from memory. Fingers crossed I got that correct.

In the 3 motorhomes I've owned I've always used Shell Rotella 15W-40. While it is listed as a "diesel" motor oil, I've used it in gas and propane generators. I was told by a Cummins/Onan service rep that its a good substitute for the Onan oil. Onan doesn't make its own oil so you're getting a different brand anyway.

I use Shell as well. I would recommend the Onan brand oil filter as it's taller and easier to install.
I would wait until you change the oil if you only have 5 hours on it. It needs more hours on it to get any metal shavings out of the engine from being new.

The owners manuals for the LP generators state: "Use premium quality motor oil with the AB1 (American Petroleum Institute) designation SG on the container. Figure 10 shows the recommended oil weight for the temperature range that the genset will be operated in. Make sure the engine oil weight is correct for the expected temperature range. The engine oil capacity is 1.6 quarts (1.5 litres). Single-grade oil is preferable when temperatures are consistently over 3OoF (OOC). Multigrade oils are best when wide temperature variations are anticipated"
That said Onan multi-grade 15W40 will be the most common taking care of your generator from 10 degrees F to over 105 degrees ambient temperatures. Rotella 15W40 should meet and exceed those requirements along with be more easily obtained at most autoparts stores or Walmarts.
Note though that in severe or dusty conditions, which the way most RV generators are mounted puts them into that severe service condition, that after the 20 hour break-in period oil changes are scheduled for every 50 hours.
The 50 hour recommendation is not excessive as 50 hours is how long it takes to drive a small air cooled motorcycle 3,000 miles at 60 mph at which time it would need an oil change to put things into perspective. So a 50 hour oil change interval for an air cooled engine running at near it max rpm all the time is pretty reasonable.

FWIW: Not attempting to start an argument here (to each his own) but I change the oil and filters on our 2013 SMART car (toad), our 2017 Cambria (Ford V10) and the Onan Generator once a year. Usually in May. Amsoil is used exclusively. A bit expensive, but excellent temperature characteristics which is important here in Florida. Have also used Amsoil engine & transmission lubricant in 2 Porsches, a Toyota MR2, and a Norton Motorcycle with success in the past. Never the slightest problem in more than 40 years. Purolater BOSS oil filters are highly rated. Two cents worth.....

Onan Oil
I have found Onan oil and other supplies at Camping World in the past, but the last time they didn’t have any in stock. After searching I found Onan oil, fuel filter and oil filter on Amazon. They also carry so the the replacement parts, like the fuel pump!
