The spare on our 2012 Itasca Sunstar was in a slide-out compartment, under our bed. I bought a Roadmaster spare tire carrier. Very happy with it--and it came in handy on a trip south last December:

If you could legally do so, would you roll the dice on RV insurance? When we blew our tire, I spent most of an afternoon trying to find a new spare. If your rim is damaged, you're SOL. The roadside assist tech was able to change the tire and get us on the road quickly; without a spare, we'd have been dead in the water on I-65 for God knows how long.
