Mine ususally worked pretty well until about 40 degrees. It depends somewhat on the humidity.
I agree. You should count on it working down to about 40 and consider yourself lucky if it works below that. Occasionally it will stop working at about 43. The more humidity the higher it stops working.

Just set it on heat pump and forget it, on our 2008 when the temp got 5 degrees below the setting, the gas heat would automatically kick on. And in the morning when it warmed outside the electric heat pump would come on.

You can also try setting it only two degrees higher than the thermostat reads then ramp it up. I haven't tried this but read it will allow you to raise the temp without the gas furnace kicking on. Let us know if it works.
