Albuquerque campgrounds

We're going to spend a couple days in Albuquerque next week, but we'll be driving a car and staying in a hotel. One of the things we want to do while there is scope out a few RV campgrounds, so we can go back with the RV if we want. I thought about staying at Santa Fe Skies and driving down, but I think Santa Fe might be a tad chilly this time of year.

So, looking for recommendations of parks to check out within 5-15 miles of the downtown/old town areas, but also other parts of town worth looking at. DW is interested in art/museums/etc. hence the Old Town interest. I'm more into the dining/brewery scene really. Suggestions? Recommendations?

check out Isleta Lakes RV Park. Off I-25 about 10-miles south of I-40. Mostly spacious pull-thrus, some baxk-ins, 50-amp FHU, satellite dish friendly. two fishing lakes ($) surrounded by a 1.5-mi gravel walking track. free shuttle to the Isleta casino, 20-min to downtown.

We have stayed at the KOA North several times on our way out to Moab. You can walk next door to the Kaktus Brewing Company for pizza and craft beers. The KOA itself is pretty nice, although older and a tight fit on some spots. Staff always good and the place was always clean. The path out of the park and over to the brewery is sketchy looking first time through. We had read all these great reviews about Kaktus, but the first time we stayed there and started to walk over we were thinking "what have we gotten ourselves into???". Then, after you complete the short walk over and experience the place it all makes sense. Pizza and beers are as good as the reviews promise. Live music sometimes. All in all, a good experience. VERY casual and laid back. It might be a little further North than you are looking for, but it may be a good option. Read the reviews on both the park and the Kaktus and decide for yourself. We particularly liked being able to simply walk to Kaktus at the end of a long day - no car needed. We would definitely stay there in the future, and definitely wander next door for dinner. Cheers!

Our best friends live in ABQ and we visit them at least twice a year. We've checked out all of the RV parks and stayed at the KOA and American RV. We have looked at all the others and they range from OK to bad.

The best is the Rt 66 RV Resort. The problem is it's a further 8 miles west of American RV Park. The American RV Park is already 8 miles west of the middle of town.

We've stayed at American RV Park for 15 years. Back then it was the TOP NOTCH RV park in the area. But then 6 or so years ago was sold to new owners. They have milked the park and not invested in any repairs or improvements. We keep thinking we'll not go back but it's so conveniently located for us that we always do. I will add that last year they finally started to do some landscaping repairs. And last fall's trip showed some small signs of improvements.

The KOA is too crowded, in a bad location in town and just not convenient. We stayed there twice but haven't gone back.

There is a new KOA northwest of Town near the suburb of Bernalillo. It's pretty far away so we haven't checked it out.

American RV Park has two sections - the "old" section has trees and some paved sites. The long term campers seem to stay there. Then the "new" section is for "big rigs" it's not all that new and has been there 7 or 8 years but there's no trees but everything is paved. The site numbers in the new section are all in the 200's so we always ask for a site in the 200's.

ABQ is easy to get around except for rush hour on I-40 and I-25. Great food there too.

Last month, we stayed at the Black Mesa Casino RV Park, 26 miles N of ABQ and 1/2 mile E of I-25. It was $20/night for W/E hookups and a dump in 45, very long, gravel sites. Just go to the front desk/players club, pay, and they will send someone out to unlock the electric box. NO hard sell or requirement to buy anything else.

As well as the usual casino amenities, they have a gas station-convenience store and a truck parking area distant from the RV parking. The fuel prices there were 25 cents a gallon cheaper than ABQ or Santa Fe. We will be back!

Agree that Santa Fe Skies is nice, but pretty far from ABQ. It's starting to get warmer today here in NM. I've been to Stagecoach Stop in Bernalillo, it's probably the nicest regarding location and nice sites.

We just got home from ABQ a couple of hours ago, very long drive. I wanted to go up through Taos and over through Angel Fire, but decided to scratch it this trip. We drove up to Sandia Crest on Monday and parts of the road would have been impassible without AWD, at least a couple feet of snow and lots of drifting.

We drove out to American to look but didn't go in. The part we could see was all paved but the spots looked level and spacious. We wanted to go see Rt 66 but we thought American was already further out than we wanted. I was surprised how easy it was to get around even when the traffic got heavy. My wife connected on FB with a friend from college (40 years ago) and we went to visit him, he is an art collector/dealer and had just an amazing collection, including a couple of Anthony Quinn original items (the actor, I had no idea he was also a very good artist).

There were a couple very good restaurants just a block from our hotel, and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is a must see. And their cafe has amazing food. All in all a very short but great trip. I think we'll go back next year with the MH. Thanks for the many suggestions, but we have absolutely zero use for casinos in general, so camping at one has no attraction for us.

Long ago, in 2011, we stayed at Enchanted Trails RV Park & Trading Post. It was really nice, moderately priced, clean and staffed by friendly folk. It was also fun to walk around and look at their classic car/trailer combos.
