The chassis battery is the battery that starts the engine. If you have a "Boost" switch on the dash, it bridges the house batteries to the chassis battery(s) for extra power.

Don't forget that there are some items wired directly to the chassis batteries such as your step motor. Not sure what the other things are but I believe I have read there is a very small constant...
