This is one of the things I discovered while doing mine. I didn't shove the coat hanger through, the caulk was missing and it just went right through.

Blast valve, I was the OP on the link you posted and, as they say, so far so good. We're probably 20+ showers in and the repair is still holding. Fingers crossed for longevity.
