The Retirement Plan

While talking with a financial advisor in 2011. The question was asked, "What does retirement look like for you?" My first thought was I don't know. I had assumed I would work up until the end due to have my daughter late in life at 42. So after spending the night thinking it over.* I thought,* I have always like the idea of camping and traveling the USA. So the dream was hatched. Buy an RV and see the country. My wife of 29 years past away in 2010, I was now a single parent of a 16 year old high school student with plans to go to college. So now, I have this dream of living full-time in an RV. What's the plan? Win the lottery, yeah right. Here’s the other plan sell the house,* for enough to pay off mortgage, pay for college and downpayment on RV. Time frame for all this would be after High School Graduation in ’15 and when I turn 62 in Nov ’17. I’ve been thinking of a 36’ to 40’ Motorhome. The only income I will have will be Military Retirement and SS. I plan on doing some work camping when and if I can find it. So that is the dream and the plan, where do I go from here?

********UPDATED TO THE PLAN********

It is now February 2018. The time has finally come. My daughter finished culinary school in July ‘17 found a job and move to an apartment in November. The house closed escrow in December, I purchased the motorhome, a 2007 Winnebago Tour 40 TD a few days later. Last week I got the “toad”. So all the pieces are in place. I’m planning to move out of apartment and into RV in April, and on the road no later than the end of June.*I’m in California and my first trip will be to Houston, Texas with stops in Las Vegas, Tucson and Austin. After that I’m not sure where to go in search of mild temperatures and exploration.

Welcome to the RV gypsy life, Blackvelvet! If you are headed to the Florida panhandle, I recommend two military campgrounds in Pensacola: Oak Grove Campground at Naval Air Station Pensacola and Blue Angel Naval Recreation Area. There are also great military campgrounds at Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Panama City. Check them out at U.S. Military Campgrounds and RV Parks - Home under the Florida listings.

Happy and safe travels!

Hello Blackvelvet,

It’s great to see your plan come to life! Sounds like you’ll have a great time wherever you go because you put a lot of research and thought into planning your routes. I can’t give you any advice on areas with warmer climates (we live in the Pacific Northwest and haven’t travelled too far yet), but if your ever near Washington, we’ll be glad to show you some excellent and beautiful places to navigate your rig to.
Safe travels!
