Fuel Filter Location

Hi,

Where is the location of the secondary fuel filter on 2002 Horizon 34HD with 3126 320HP Cat?

With regard to the water separator located behind the radiator - is this unit a separator only or a filter/separator?

Thanks.

The filter behind the radiator is a 30 micron and separator. The 2 micron is generally mounted right on the side of engine up high

jhanan, Not sure about you coach, but here is a thread with pictures that may be helpful.

Thanks, the Journey is the sister ship of the Horizon - when years matched.

Unless your 2002 Horizon is different from the 2002 Journey with the same engine (3126E CAT), there is only one fuel filter. We had our 2002 Journey for 8 years. Winnebago configured the coach with one, 2 micron high efficiency fuel/water separator filter and it is the one just inside the lower engine access grill. A call to Winnebago's service folks will confirm the presence/absence of a second filter.

Hey SML,
The "dual" or "single" fuel filter debate's been here a few times, as you know. I've talked with multiple other Winne/Itasca/Horizon/Journey/Meridian owners and as of yet, I have yet to find a definite date when CAT/Freightliner either discontinued the used of dual filters and, then, re-started the use of dual filters. I've got several friends who have '01, '02, and '03 Journeys and, some came with dual filters from the factory and some came with a single one on the rear. And, even then, many that had only the single one, did NOT have the glass/plastic clear bowl on the bottom of it, like mine.

After talking with Brett Wolfe about the issues I had with start up after a fuel filter change, we discussed the facts that Freightliner and CAT had "penny pinching debates" about whether a second filter was needed or not. Freightliner won those debates, at least for a while. You see, up to a certain time frame, it was general that Winnes with Freightliner chassis and CAT engine did have two filters. Then the bean counters won and, they started building them with a single filter.

Then, apparently something changed again, because I've talked with folks that have the same exact coach as ours, an '04 Itasca Horizon, with the C-7 330 CAT, that have TWO filters, whereas ours has a single one. So, just exactly when two were used and then one and then, back to two again, is still somewhat of a mystery. CAT even told me I had TWO oil filters, AIN'T HAPPENING!! There's only one on there, just like there's only one fuel filter.

This is primarily why I've stopped commenting on fuel filter issue related threads. I've seen so many that say, YOU DO HAVE TWO fuel filters and the OP never finds the second one. Just some thoughts here.
Scott

Agree Scott. That is why I suggested the call to Winnebago. With his coach serial #, they should be able to give a definitive answer.

Called Winnebago. They said that the configuration is a stock FL setup - no modification by Winnebago. FL Albany says it is an on engine filter setup. However, the Albany FL office in could not produce the PN for the water separator, only the on engine 2 micron filter that is without a water separate - pn CAT 1R0751. Winnebago says to call FL Corporate office, but provided 1-800 number that does not work!

So I got ahold of FL corporate custom chassis help line - which says for the CAT 3126 there is a CAT bulletin dated Feb 9 2001, the announces the 2 into 1 change. Bulletin CAT # RV01-01. My unit is built Oct 2001, so should have the single filter configuration. That PN is ABP 32 FRT 03 - Filter/Water Separator. FL said to call CAT with my engineer SN number to make a final check. 877-777-3126

Called CAT and they provided more info - it is a single filter configuration so that is confirmed, but the part no is different for the CAT filter than FL. PN CAT 175-2949. Also the CAT guy was able to till me a lot more about my motor with 91K miles. 1 it has never been to CAT for service. 2, it is 7 software patches behind. 3, It has never been registered with an owner. 4, It is out of warranty.

Now for my low power issue. I thought it was a contaminated fuel filter. Confirmed valve check at 13K mile and then 100K miles is required. 13K was done by 1st owner - I have paperwork. Not air filter, and oil change was last fall per schedule. Could be the turbo - need to check boost. Could be the Huey pump (sp?). But he said if I lost that that it would be much worst power lost. So he just recommend take it to CAT and they will put the motor on their computer and tell my what codes are on it and run the diag and tell me what the issue is.

Found this:

Dreamer,
While I only use the CAT 198-6378 or Alliance ABP/N122-32FRT03 filters on our 3126E (330HP) engine, the following are supposed to be proper replacements.
CAT 198-6378
WIX 33242
NAPA 3242
Fleetguard FS-1242 (w/o bowl)
Fleetguard FS-1242B (w/bowl)
Alliance ABP/N122-32FRT03

Only One Old Fellow's Opinion

Edited to correct part numbers

When with the simple filter with the petcock - PN CAT 175-2949. Note the NAPA part for this one is 3005, not 3242. Part 3242 is missing the bottom valve assembly (or whatever). NAPA says the 3005 is a 3 micron filter. It will do for now. I will pick up the CAT filter when I'm close to my CAT store, and keep the 3005 as my spare. Lesson learned. Always have a fuel filter spare. (Actually, I did - I have the on engine filter part the FL Albany sold me that I cannot use!).

Well, that was the ticket. Engine/Trans shudder has disappeared - it was fuel starvation all along. 2nd time this has happened in 20K miles. Dirty diesel fuel?
