Tire carrier recall (2021-2023MY)

Was informed that there's a recall campaign for tire carrier for Micro Minnie, specifically ones that have the "off-road" tire, aka ones that came with Duratrac tire and spare using either Duratrac or Comforser.

Apparently due to the additional weight there's being cases where the carrier just broke apart at welds.

They will start replacing them beginning of June.

We just brought our 2022 2108DS back from our dealer's service department (major issue with slide-out separating from side panel), and they weren't aware of this recall until I asked about it.

After I mentioned it, my dealer confirmed that there was a recall notice, but no service procedure had been published by Winnebago yet. They suggested I remove the spare tire myself and keep it in back of truck for now.

Spare Tire Mount Recall - Not Official

The phone lead-in message at WBGO Towables CS while waiting for a rep was about a spare tire recall. Once connected, I gave the rep my VIN and asked if my 2023 Micro Minnie 2108TB was affected. She said it was but there is nothing availabe yet for distribution to customers.

She thought it was the mounting (mine is bumper mounted) and that owners would be asked to carry the spare in their TV until the issue was resolved. That was early last week, and I haven’t received anything “official” yet.

I dumped the carrier and relocated the tire to the tongue.

I viewed the linked post - excellent idea and craftsmanship. ... might just copy that, or something a lot like that. I don't think I would have come up with the idea to use a tire winch.

I will have the recall work done for resale value, but I'm going to remove the spare regardless. I would have to move it to the none-ladder side to fit a bike rack, and then it completely covers the license plate.

Did you happen to determine the resulting change to tongue weight?
I do like that approach.

Good question. I did, and my set-up will tolerate the extra weight. ... might need a WD hitch adjustment, though.

Any weight brought into a TT will go on the tougue or the axles, and often times a combination of both. When you mount that far forward plan for it to be almost all tongue weight.

Putting it in the bed of the TV is a legitimate option, too. (I would put it in last so it was first out and handy if necessary.)

I did receive this recall today, too. I have already replaced the tires on my rig w/ Goodyear Endurance tires and was going to get to the spare as to keep them all the same.

Wonder if the lighter Endurance would solve the issue as the recall specifically states "when loaded with certain off-road style tires" which mine has. Westlakes I believe.

I haven't received the letter yet, but did remove the tire and mount. I don't know what the Endurance weighs. The Westlake and rim weighs 58 pounds.

... waiting to read the recall letter. Until then I'm guessing the hardware is inadequate.

Got my notice yesterday. Called my dealer this morning. Service manager stated Winnebago sent out the notices before sending the necessary replacement units. He has now ordered 50 units and has taken 20 calls in the last two days, so they started a list. You are put on the list in the order that you called in. I will then be called when they get to me. When they call, I schedule a time to pull the trailer in, they replace the carrier (20 minutes) and I drive away.

He also said the replacement parts would likely take a few weeks. In the meantime, he recommended removing the tire and putting it in the TV.

Sounds easy enough. My dealer’s service department has been good to me in the past with WDH and city water valve issues. Good and timely work as promised. Here’s to this process being as easy as it sounds. Good luck! As with most recalls and service, the dealership is the key.

That looks much more sturdy. It also looks like it has carriage bolts to fasten to the bumper. That's what I hope WBGO uses for their replacements. There have been problems in the past with U-bolts breaking that had cold bends in square corners.

Selling dealer is 300 miles away and local dealer not getting back to me so not worth the hassle, bought one from Amazon. having it in the vehicle is a pain in the ars as my tailgate cannot open when it’s hooked up.

Looks like it would mount too low to access the rear receiver. But definitely more robust that the OEM version.

Here it is mounted. receiver is blocked but don’t use that. looks lower than it actually is while driving because trailer sits nose high on driveway. this bracket is rock solid and does not wobble/wiggle or move at all. so until WB comes up with a replacement, this is it $35.00

I called to get an appointment with my local Winnebago dealer (Reno Nevada) and was told that they would not fix it since I did not buy it from them. A little research and I am finding out that most dealers are doing this. Since I bought my trailer 400 miles from where I live ( I bought it during Covid and they had the model I wanted), I will have to fix it myself. New owners or people thinking of buying a Winnebago should either buy it locally or find another brand.

Yep. even though winnebago’s phone message says, call your local dealer. they won’t return my calls either since I bought it elsewhere. I’ll email winnebago, my thought is by law since it’s a safety recall ANY dealer should do it.
