On my 02 Journey coming south this week I noticed that my house batteries were not charging from the altenator. They charge on shore power and generator but not while driving.
Do you know what relay or solonoid under the hood is the culpret? Facing the panel is it the one on the left or right?...I have not tested yet but plan to jumper it with a wire and see if if charges. I will also test the ignitor wire for 12v when key is on. I would guess it is a continuous relay or solonoid.
Any help or photos is appreciated. I have meter savy but not sure where to look or how to test...thanks RKL

Are you sure they are supposed to charge off the alternator? My house batteries on my 1999 Chieftain DP only charge off shorepower or the generator. The alternator only charges my chassis batteries.

It's the same solenoid that is activated by the aux start switch. Have someone hit that switch a few times while you listen up front. If that is not clicking because something is wrong with it or it's controls, the other solenoid is the house battery disconnect so you could identify it by flipping the disconnect on and off a few times and listening for the click...

That solenoid is notorious for failing. Just replace it.

I don't remember for sure, but believe it is directly in front of the driver. It looks like an old Ford starter solenoid.

The solonoid that is notorious for failing is the aux/start one if I read you correctly...Can you explain how this solonoid charges the house batteries and then jumpers them to assist the chassis battery for starting?...If they are connected for charging thne why do you have to press the switch unless the charging line is much thinner...thanks RKL

All I can tell you is that we had the same symptoms - no coach battery charge from the alternator, and no aux start. They changed the relay and both now work.

Hi RKL,
The coil of this contactor (Trombetta Bear) is feed plus 12 volts from a relay in the engine computer shortly after the engine is started. The main contacts actually tie the chassis and house battery banks together. That way the high current alternator of the diesel engine can charge all batteries while you drive. The coil can also receive power from the ˜Aux Start' switch. In your case the likely problem is either the contactor coil is open or the contacts are dirty. Do a search on ˜Trombetta' to find out all you ever wanted to know on this subject.

I had the same symptoms on my 2004 30B. It was that the contacts on the battery bridge contactor had developed a very high resistance. However, the coil was still operating.
