New Problem With Generator
My house batteries went bad, but before removing them, I plugged into shore power for a couple of days just for the benefit of the charger. After unplugging shore power, the only way I am able to start the generator is with the switch on the generator. The switch on EMS and the one on the dash are not working. I replaced the house batteries, but no cigar. What do I need to be checking?

You have corroded connections somewhere.

I think you're right. I’m about to go try and find it. It seems to have only affected the generator switches at the EMS and on the dash. It will start at the generator. Thanks!

My dash generator switch is working again, but not the one on the EMS board. Everything else on the board works. When I push the off side of the switch 3 times, it shows a 23 code, low oil pressure cut off. I really don’t think there is an oil pressure problem. Is there a way to reset that? Is there a fuse I might have missed?

What year, model line and floor plan are we discussing along with which model generator?

Neil, I have a 2002 Adventurer 32V, 5500 Onan. The problem started after leaving the disconnect battery switch on for more than a week on chassis batteries that were already having trouble holding charge. The batteries went completely down, so I plugged into shore power and was able to start the generator at the generator. After about 30 minutes, I saw that the batteries were done for, so I installed new batteries. At that point everything worked except the generator switch at the EMS. The switch on the dash does work. I clipped the non working switch out, and with multimeter found that it has around 11 volts coming to the start wire. I have not crossed it out between the ground and start terminals, but I’m suspecting the switch is bad. What do you think?

Charley I'd also consider a faulty low oil pressure cut off switch. These can drive you nuts with an intemitent problem. The good thing is they aren't very expensive.

You may be right, Topsail. It is showing a 23 code. Where is that switch?

Charley, this guide is a very good one. Take a look at page 10 for the location specific to your generator. Hopefully your switch is external. Some of these buggers are internal. What a pain. Also, the troubleshooting questions and answers are very helpful. You seem to be on the right track. Good luck.
