Rain on the Roof
Wonder how many of you have tried to sleep through a heavy rain with our fiberglass (or whatever the top is?) top? My goodness it is really noisy!!
Stayed just outside of Chicago last friday and had 6" of rain fall overnight - needless to say not much sleep was had by any of us.

Parked in South Georgia once under big oak trees. Acorns kept falling all night, I think the squirrels was having a war with mortors.

I have memory foam ear plugs (purple!) that I bought at Lowes. Muffles loud noises to where I can sleep but I can still hear the alarm clock go off. I wear them when we pavement park at time. It muffles doesn't get rid of all noises (I'm a light sleeper most of the time). David sometimes snores really loud.

If one has an RV with a rubber roof and good thick insulation in the roof, the noise from rain is not as loud. The noise from heavy rain in our HitchHiker is not nearly as loud as in our older Sunnybrook 5th-wheel.

Sleep? It's even tough to watch TV when it's raining hard!
I'm sensitive to noise when I sleep and have become adicted to the round, gel type ear plugs sold at Walgreens and other places I'm sure. They come very close to blocking out all noise.
I can't hear my alarm clock with or without them... because I shot it full of holes when I retired!

We love the pitter patter of the rain, helps us sleep in our cozy environment. Of course my first thought is that I hope I have no leaks waiting for me to find in the morning.

Many people love the sound of rain on the roof.
It's the sound of it coming in that bothers us.

My parents had a pop up camper that made a sound like frying bacon when it rained.
I also find the sound of rain on the roof relaxing.

This is no pitter patter folk's - I don't think any of you could sleep through a heavy downpour with a Winnie roof. When it was just a normal rain it was okay but when it get's really heavy it is almost deafening.
We've had our Suncruiser for 4 summers and have only had this happen twice in all that time but - it really is intense.

Our coach was only 3 months old when we were staying at a place near Crazy Horse/Mt Rushmore and a hail storm rolled in. Being a California boy, I had never seen "real hail". Holy smokes. It was later afternoon so everything was very lit up. There was not a doubt in my mind that our new coach was ruined by the large hail pounding it from everywhere.
Just couldn't believe it when the skies cleared and I did a walk around only to find everything in tact and not looking like the surface of a golf ball!

Got caught in a heavy hail storm at a state park near Xenia Ohio last year. Sounded like being inside a trash can while Phil Collins practiced his licks! And a tornado rolled thru about 10 miles south of us. Brought back memories of Xenia's unfortunate brush w/ a tornado years ago. But the roof held up well.

We have had fiberglass, rubber and aluminum roofs and I can tell you that one is not noticeably quieter than the other in heavy rain.

Glad I'm not alone. Our first trip in a RV to New Bern NC, and I Had been under around and all over the RV checking things out for the first time. It was mid afternoon and 98 degrees. Both air conditioners were doing all the could do, then all of a sudden a terrible roar, I thought Oh my god, I just lost not one but both air conditioners. I quickly shut them both down in an effort to limit my damages, all I could see was $$$$. Then confusion, the air conditioners were off, but the deafening sound continued. I shouted to the wife," I can't find whats causing the terrible noise!!". Her response was look outside dear, and maybe you should go out and tilt the awning, but before you do turn up the TV.
Your right, it sounds worse than a train wreck. But the good thing was, "The $$$ signs went away", and no leaks.......so far.

PS: There is nothing soothing about a roar in a Winnie., but now I'm ready for it

The rain makes me sleep better. First night was hard to sleep. It rains on us every weekend. I call the RV the swamp bus now. Always raining.

I use a fan for background white noise. It blocks out all the little subtle disturbing sounds. Sounds like the same thing rain on the roof is doing.

I take my hearing aids out before I go to bed. I just hope the roof doesn't cave in. I wouldn't hear it, I'd feel it.
