Would like to replace the fabric on my A&E patio awning. Have found several sources for replacement material but they all say "not to be used with metal weathershield". Has anyone removed the metal shield that comes on our Winnebagos and installed the new fabric with the vinyl weathershield ?

Yepper. I had a new A&E awning installed about 2 yrs ago. The fabric had a flaw and they ordered new fabric. They just removed the defective fabric and replaced it with the new and I have the metal awning shield.

What difference would there be to the fabric with or without the metal shield? My fabric doesn't appear to have any extra material where the shield rests on it when opened and it's still in excellent condition after 17 years.
So, why would fabric manufacturers specify that theirs should not be used with a metal shield? Only thing I can think of is that the manufacturers are using fewer threads/cu. inch these days and their awnings are flimsier now.

I mainly think it a selling feature it helps protect the awning from stuff hitting it while going down the road and while it's rolled up, and keeps the sun off that small area which is a area that starts to come apart over time. If you got 17 yrs on yours that is excellant you must take care of it and keep it clean

I do clean it occasionally but it seldom needs it because of the cover. But I am pretty careful about rolling it up when storms are nearby, or when the wind is whipping leaves around or if it's raining. Then I always roll it up dry. Takes some pre-planning and careful weather watching but I seem to be pretty good at that, generally.
