I do not use the tie down strap. The brackets at the bottom of the bed hold the mattress in place when the bed is raised. We have the 8" mattress from plushbeds.com.

I replaced the bed in our Ellipse 42QD with memory foam. No problem at all when the bed folds to bring in the slide. Hated the air mattress.
