you are right, it is either electric or gas for heat. the gas heat will not come on if the room is warmer than the thermostat setting. you can use either gas or electric or both for the water...

we are in sw wash. where the temps occasionally get to the lower 20's.
i installed 3 inside-outside temperature gauges to monitor the water...
