Cotter pin might be better, but probably softer. I would make sure you keep the main screw (not the self-tapping screw) well greased to minimize the stress on whatever you use.

Could you use a small diameter (not short) self-tapping screw? My only concern about that is that if it broke it might be difficult to get out. But jacks are not that expensive in the scheme of...
