I did basicly the same thing , only I used a paint roller tray and drilled a 1/2 inch hole in one corner. I can hook the tray to the cross bars to free up both hands.

2016 Vista LX owner

Just purchased a 2016 Vista 35F. We upgraded from a fifth wheel, what a difference. Looking forward to many good camping experiences in the future.
