Voyage 35A Spare

I was crawling around under my Voyage and was surprised to find a spare tire. The tire was jammed in between the frame rails and held in place by a steel crossbar.

The arrow points to the crossbar that I have swiveled out of the way.

Compression damage to the right side of the tire.

Compression damage to the left side of the tire.

I believe that this tire storage is a modification by a prior owner as the tire is deformed both by the crossbar support and being compressed between the frame rails.

Am I correct that the Voyage did not come from the factory with a spare tire?

I'm pretty sure a previous owner put it there. Our 2006 Sightseer had spare tire, but it was mounted to a wheel (tire rim) and stored under the bed and accessed by an outside door.

The original owner probably got tired of his roof top storage bungee cords braking.

I would assume any factory system would be designed to support the wheel, not the tire, although thinking about it I think my 89 Ranger supports both.
