I ended up cutting off two of the plastic tabs...

I ended up cutting off two of the plastic tabs extending out from the connector....still connects in four places to the fitting, but now fits through the compartment with a little coaxing.

Sounds like I need to either:
1) find a sewer hose that fits
2) modify my RhinoFlex to fit the opening
3) modify the opening to fit...
