What Do You Use Your Generator For?
Parallax Power Systems, the transfer switch manufacturer that Winnebago uses, says that the primary use of a generator in a motor home is dry camping, not for power while driving. What do you primarily use your generator for?

Both. Particularly in hot weather, run the generator on the road to power the roof top air conditioners.

We use ours any time it's warm for the whole house A/C. The coach is much more comfortable and it's only a little, if any, more expensive. Also exercise it every month or so to make sure the engine and generator are used regularly.

We've used ours exactly once while camping. The power at the site died. On the road, we use it often to run the house air conditioning and refrigerator.

Belive me if you live or travel in the Southwest you use it for AC when you drive and Parallax and Winnie know that! As always it's all about cost. Up grade before you damage your AC.

........ It's obvious here that everyone does it exactky like we do. AC mainly when it's HOT, and fridge and microwave for coffee. We close off the hallway and use the dash ac as well as the front unit, makes for a comfortable drive. Good luck and travel safe.

Why does it matter, you own it, not them!

Always on when we drive. Since I don't do dry camping I need to excercise the genny. Besides I read that the genny is cheaper to run than your dash AC plus no power is taken away from the engine.

Whatever we need electricity for when not plugged in to shore power. When driving it's usually used to operate the roof A/C's.

I use mine primarily while driving to run the A/C's, cheaper, more dependable, and takes a load off the engine. Also use it during stops on the road for lunches, breakfast, etc. Other than that it is the most expensive piece of equipment on your rig.

Needed a third choice for both. Same with us. For coffee when we dry camp overnight on the road and for the house air when it is hot.

Sounds like more slimy lawyer speak for a reason to deny warranty. What difference does it make to them anyway.
On our motorhomes, it got most of the hours on the generator while on the highway.

I thought about a third choice, but I was really looking to see what you used it for the most. Like most others, we use it for both, but since we live in Texas, from May to October, if the engine is running, so is the generator.
If I can figure out how to edit the poll, I'll add a third choice.

We don't dry camp. We use it on the road occasionally to augment the dash A/C. I'll also start it about 10 minutes before arriving at a CG when it is hot, so that the coach will stay cool until I hook up the shore power. We have also used it in an emergency. When Ike came through out area as a Cat 1 and power was out. We ran it for 4 days continuously.

While on our one big trip we used it for both, but now that our Beast is happily parked at her home, it mainly gets exercised every other month and we're considering removing it for a back-up at the house...
