On my coach, the heatpump blows out of the vents in the ceiling and the furnace comes out of the vents in the floor

Don't know if I can help much with the thermostat, but on mine, the furnace will always come on when the temp is below about 40 degrees. No matter whether the t'stat is set for electric or gas.
