Wil spare tire fit into basement storage compartment?

I am contemplating carrying a spare tire (no rim)with me, especially on trips into Mexico. I was curious if anyone with a 34' Meridian or Journey attempted to carry just a spare tire (no rim) in the basement compartment that also houses the water pump. There seems to be enough room on the upper shelf just forward of the water pump. Anyone try this?

Have 34 ft Horizon keep spare in basement but it is at an angle not on shelf between door and shelf.
 
I carry an unmounted tire in the compartment just forward of the LP tank...tire is on the very top pushed all the way to the back.
 
smlranger - I'm trying to decide how to carry a spare in my '04 36' Meridian but didn't think I could get one in that compartment. Were you able to get yours in there by yourself or is that at least a 2 person job? Does it leave any room for anything else once you have the tire shoved as far back as it will go? I usually have several nick/nack accesory items on that shelf but guess I could find other places for them.

We have been able to store an unmounted tire in the compartment in front of the propane taank on the right side of 2004 36G Meridian. With the aid of my wife, we were able to get it into the top shelve. We were not able to slide the tire back into the space completely, so there is some storage space behind the tire but it is not easily accessible behind the stgored tire.
 
The easiest way to get the spare on the shelf is to put it inside of a large plastic bag first then slide it in.

I have the tire shoved in as far as it will go. I am able to get it in and out by myself. I just kind of let it slide out and down (have to removed stuff from the bottom of the compartment).
 
Can anyone make a good guess as to what a 22.5 tire without the rim might weigh? Mine are 255/80, don't know if the 235 or 275 70's or 80's weigh much different. The 70's will have a wider tread and might be harder to fit it up on the shelf in the compartment.

There was a really good thred on mounting the spare on the frame under the coach. I've been thinking about putting one on the frame mount but just haven't had the time.
The thread had pictures to show the mount..
 
Lots of good information here, it sounds like I can squeeze an unmounted tire into this compartment. I would like to carry just a spare tire, because I have been with other motorhome owners who had a flat and had to wait forever for the roadside service to locate a tire. Changing the tire was a breeze, they didn't even take the wheel (front) off the coach! Just jacked it up, removed the tire and put the new one on.
 
Wow, almost a 100 lbs, that's a lot of weight to try to work up into a compartment, even for two stout men. Kind of a toss-up versus trying to mount one up under the coach in front of the differential. I'v bought some adjustable straps to do this if I can ever find a good used tire for the spare, but I still like the compartment idea. I hate to spend over $4oo for new tire just for the spare and have it outdated by the time I'm ready for new ones all the way around. Once I get any new tires I'll use one of the take-offs as the spare.

I had a 02 Horizon 40QD? and mounted a tire underneath just ahead of the rear wheels. There was a space that looks like it was meant for a tire. Talk about a bear to mount though. It took two of us to get it up. I never had to use it,and I sold the coach to a fellow WIT club member that I still see, and the tire is still there! He checks it every now and then.

I also keep a spare tire in the compartment in front of the propane tank (upper shelf). Before you slide it in, tie a rope around the tire to form a handle. Makes it much easier to pull it out when/if the time comes.
 
Catpowered~ Since we have the same coach I'll say the 9R22.5 is an inch narrower than the stock tire. The 9R is a easy spare to find and is the same height as stock. The 9R will fit into the cabinet next to the propane tank. You have to crawl in the cabinet and relocate the shield around the plumbing that dumps into the top of our water tank. You have to move this shield a few inches in. Also when you do put your unmounted spare in there wrap a flat strap around it first so you can pull it out.

Or look under the frame and with four straps you can carry the sprare under the frame in the space between the fuel tank and water tank.

Or have your tire mounted on a rim and use this spare carrier idea another forum member invented several years ago.

Either way, it's good to have a spare.
