What oil is everyone using in their gas generators. I currently use shell rotella 5W-40 synthetic and interested to see what others are using and why.

:dance:I have been using 15W-40 but the last time I used 5W-30 and now it seems to leak a bit more. I'll go back to the thicker oil before it gets to hot.

That's interesting. I haven't had any leaks in my genset, and have had very good results with the 5W-40. I know that some have used Mobil 1 10W-30, maybe one of those folks will chime in. I am looking at going to it in my chassis engine. It would be nice to be able to use the same oil for both applications.

I've used 10W-30 Mobil 1 synthetic since purchasing the motorhome in 2004. I like synthetic because it's great for cold weather starts and it gives me a little more slack in terms of oil and filter change intervals. I don't have to add any make-up oil so leakage or burning isn't an issue.

Been using Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30 in v10 engine now for several years and straight 30w non-synthetic in Onan 5.5 genset. Next genset oil change will probably go with same weight Mobil 1

I have use 5-30 Mobil 1 all around may need Gen set start in cold of winter for power outage.

i am using AMSOIL 5w30 series 3000 SYNTHETIC oil in my engine, and AMSOIL 10w40 synthetic oil in my genny.
the "why" is that AMSOIL is the best oil made.:D better fuel economy, power, and engine life are some of the AMSOIL'S attributes.:thumb: AMSOIL is one of the few fully synthetic oils manufactured.:)
most "synthetic" oils are extra refined petroleum based oils.:banghead: CASTROL started that mess and when sued by the API got a judge to agree with them.:banghead: so now just about all the oil manufacturers have a non-synthetic "synthetic" oil. mobile 1 has both. you have to read the can closely to tell what you are buying.

I follow the recommendations in my Onan manual. For my climate I use 15W40.

10w-30 Dino oil in the coach and Rotella 15w-40 in the Onan gennie.:thumb:

Both are changed yearly or sooner if the mileage/hrs require it.

Good input from all. I will be switching my motorhome oil from Mobil 1 5W-30 to Mobil 1 10W-30 for warm weather ops. I may do this also on the generator to keep it simple by using the same oil in everything, even my tow car. :thumb:
